A significant amount of attention has been given to Zika virus in the international news recently due to the large outbreak in central and south America that began in 2015.  This has drawn further attention to the changing epidemiology of vector-borne diseases, especially viruses.  With the emerging nature of many of these viruses in the Americas, the specifics about testing modalities and recommendations can be an ever-evolving subject and often not amenable to questions on a service such as Microbiology Question of the Day.   So today’s question will focus on some of the basics of several arthropod-borne viruses found in the Americas.
